Tour de France
Tour de France is the most prestigious and most difficult bicycle race. It covers approximately 2,235 miles. 20 professional teams consisting of 9 riders participate in the race. The fist race was in 1903 and has been held every year since except during the world wars. The race was originally a publicity stunt to sell newspapers. Since the invention of the bicycle, newspaper used bicycle racing to increase circulation. The newspapers essentially created their own news. Spectators along the route bought papers to learn the progress of the race and who won. The race was created by bicyclist and reporter Henri Desgrange. Some say he stole the idea and proposed the idea of the race to L'Auto controller, Victor Goddet, who approved the idea.
