French Dances
France has been the cultural center of Europe since medieval times. Under Louis XIV the French style ballet was born. Dancing was a popular pastime for the court. Ballroom and square became popular during this time. Eventually it moved away from the court to music halls and venues. The audience were active participants.
Gavotte:
This dance was popular during the Baroque era. It has a moderate tempo. Someone leads the dance. Gavotte compositions by Bach are the best know versions of the music. The gavotte remained popular until the 19th century.

Ballet:
The ballet originated in 15th century Italy, however it was greatly developed in France during the reign of Louis XIV. Ballet was a favorite pastime of the king. Dancers tended to be courtiers. Louis XIV opened the 1st ever ballet school in 1661. French ballet is synonymous with elegance and precise movements.

Can-Can:
The can-can was introduced in 1830. The dance was for couples. Performers did high-kicks which earned the name which means "scandal." It became a popular form of entertainment. Can-can featuring a chorus line 1st appeared in the U.S. and U.K. It was later imported back to France to entertain American and British tourists.
