Men Categories

Page history last edited by Delana 10 years ago

These are the 3 main men's categories you will see at a powwow. There are other ones such as men's southern straight, which originate out of Oklahoma. Chicken dance is another men's category.  The stories of the various dances are just one version. Each powwow and tribe have their own version of the style of dances.

 Men's Traditional:

Some say this dance is a warriors dance. The men would come into the circle and act out a hunt or battle. Northern style men wear an eagle feather bustle on their back. They also wear a breast plate on their chest. Many hold a fan and a dancing stick. The designs of their regalia come from their various tribes.

 Men's Fancy Feather:

The fancy dance is said to have originated in Oklahoma and was an answer to the wild west shows. One trademark of the fancy dancers is that they wear two bustles. The dance is fast paced. They are in contest with the singers. They try to trick the dancers with fast paced beat then an immediate stop. The fancy dancers have intricate footwork and are among the favorite at powwows.

 Men's Grass Dance:

This dance was originally a warrior society dance. It has evolved over time into a competitive form of dancing. One story of the dance is that before any dances could be held, the prairie grass had to be stomped down. The moves of the dancers were imitating the movement of the long prairie grass.
